Approximately 160 Old Girls gathered together on Saturday 5 March to celebrate Foundation Day, this year being the school’s 113th birthday.
We were privileged to host Jean Estill (nee Lawrence) and Helen Lawrence (nee Ostler) from Matric 1946 (70 Years On), and Antoinette Hersov (nee Herbert) Patience Lorimer and Reina Powell (nee Albert) from Matric 1951 (65 Years On). Our oldest attendee was Olivia Stevenson, 95-years-old, an Honorary Old Girl and teacher, who retired from Roedean in 1980. At the other end of the scale, there were 13 ‘young’ Old Girls from Matric 2011 (5 Years On) and 19 from Matric 2006 (10 Years On).
Foundation Day was also celebrated in London and Cape Town. Natalie Immelman (Matric 2003) kindly organised a tea in central London where 27 Old Girls attended, and they thoroughly enjoyed catching up with old friends. In Cape Town, Anita Lourandas (nee Christelis) (Matric 2001) organised a tea where 14 Old Girls attended.
Sasha Martalas, on behalf of SAORA, handed over R100 000 to the Roedean Academy, and R20 000 to The Link Literacy Project. These funds were the result of the SAORA’s fund-raising event, A Blooming Affair, held annually in October.
